Forest Park Lawndale, Houston and Wright Square, Savannah

Greetings Friends and Cemetery Fans —

We’ve started adding new entries in Houston’s Forest Park Lawndale Cemetery including one of the city’s most prestigious art collectors, the founder of the Houston Chronicle, and a wildcatter & philanthropist who gave away $4 million in one day prior to his death in 1957! Scroll down until you see the first NEW next to an entry.

We’ve completed our visit to Savannah cemeteries with the addition of Wright Square.

Be on the lookout for our next posting. We’re working on the most unusual burial practice we’ve encountered in our 40 years of travel.

Enjoy

Colonial Park Cemetery, Savannah & Cemetery Humor

Greetings – we’ve added more interesting folks to the Colonial Park Cemetery in Savannah including a newspaper man, an artist and a “gallant soldier.”

We’ve also added a little Cemetery Humor, part 2 in the Sidebars.

For you movie buffs, we recommend a 1963 British thriller from MGM entitled The Haunting, staring Julie Harris and Claire Bloom, among others. This subtle horror film about a weekend in a monstrously haunted mansion employs brilliant cinematography and eerie sound effects, as well as Harris’ frightening reactions, to achieve its effects.

Enjoy.

Colonial Park Cemetery & Johnson Square, Savannah Georgia

Greetings — Marks and I recently visited Savannah, Georgia. What a beautiful city. And so full of history. We spent a lovely afternoon walking through the historic Colonial Park Cemetery with its nearby Dueling Ground.

Savannah is renowned for its historic squares and one of them, Johnson Square, contains the remains of Nathanael Greene, one of George Washington’s most gifted officers. Check out the US postage stamp that bears both their likenesses.

Enjoy.
